Nothing makes up for being absent for two years, like a triumphant two-hour season premiere. And that’s just what fans of the uber-popular AMC hit Mad Men are going to get. That’s right, the complex Don Draper, Peggy Olson and Joan Harris are back, and they are bringing the heat to The Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce Agency. And if one thing is clear from a 31-second teaser on the Mad Menwebsite, there’s going to be a lot of sex, scandal and adultery – all the makings for a good drama.
Like we do with everything we watch on TV, we’ve applied Mad Men to our lives and the result is our list of life lessons learned from this Emmy Award-winning show.
According to Beyoncé, “diva is the female version of a hustler.” That certainly describes Peggy Olson, who went from being Don Draper’s assistant to his lead copywriter and probably best friend. Olson wanted more and she went after it. As one of the only female ad executives in the industry, she does a good job of holding her own while demanding respect. This wasn’t easy for women of the ’50s and ’60s. The best offense is the Peggy Olson defense. Go after everything you want in life with veracity. Goals and ambition are how you get ahead. Hard work and determination are how you remain at the top.
Every occasion calls for a look. How many times have we heard parents and grandparents talking about their era, when even breakfast was an event to dress? This is the case on Mad Men and should be the case in real life. Being over-dressed is subjective, but standing out as a style maven is absolutely something that we can learn from Mad Men. Betty Draper and Joan Harris never have a hair out of place. Pete Campbell and Roger Sterling don’t either for that matter. If we’ve learned nothing from the ad pitches that Draper delivered to perspective clients, we’ve learned that presentation is everything. Need more convincing?
