Miley Cyrus is selling a racier message these days. Case in point: Her Mario Testino-snapped cover shots for V Magazine‘s May issue. In one flick, the pop star posed in a pair of studded leather Patricia Field shorts, while exposing her topless chest under a Theyskens’ Theory jacket in another. The dynamic is somehow shockingly sexy yet tasteful, making for arguably a more interesting talking point than her music career.
Should we blame Pharrell for Cyrus’ new über-sexy, rockstar-like emergence? “He introduced me to some vintage shit in Miami that’s crazy,” the former Disney star told the mag. The super producer unknowingly helped 20-year-old Miley find her identity through her style. “They helped me understand how I could express myself through how I dressed.”
Lately the young bride-to-be has been targeted for her new style, new haircut, twerk video and uncertain relationship status, leaving some fans and critics to think she’s headed down a wonky road. But to me, it seems the former country star is just doing exactly what she’s supposed to: owning her young years and enjoying the hell out of them.
No longer the preteen that sang made-for-TV bubble gum tunes, V’s cover girl is now tatted, in tune with her sexuality and experiencing a new side of the industry: Studio sessions with Snoop Lion, parties with Teyana Taylor and rock vet Gwen Stefani, and engineering new sounds with Tyler, the Creator.
Sure, she’s tiptoeing toward adulthood and barely legal, but if you got it, flaunt it, right? Why not?
