Dear Keri Hilson,
I want to first start off by saying, yes, I am a loyal fan of Beyoncé, and yes I was offended by your comments on the shady “Turnin’ Me Off (Remix)” that was released in 2009. Prior to that, I liked your music. I was rooting for you and then came that seemingly unwarranted diss song out of nowhere. On it, you sang, “Your vision cloudy if you think that you’re the best/You can dance, she can sing but she need to move it to the left, to the left/She need to go have some babies.”
Now, I’m no rocket scientist, but those were clearly shots at Beyoncé. Whether you will ever publicly admit it or not is irrelevant. Over the years, I’ve watched and participated in the constant slander and jokes against you in attempts to get justice for your Beyoncé diss without once thinking how this might have made you feel.
We often forget that celebrities are human, too. Even with all the money and fame, words hurt. Just ask Karrueche, who was swarmed by the BeyHive. A petition was even created to deport her after she made a joke about Blue Ivy’s flawless hair on 106 & Park. This made me wonder about the BeyHive’s number one enemy, Keri Hilson—even more so after I read a 2013 interview, in which you revealed that you were in a “dark depression” in 2012.
As someone who was bullied growing up and also went through some of the darkest moments, I know firsthand how words, even from strangers, can have a profound effect.
Granted, I do not know the cause of your depression, but I do know that you addressed the constant online verbal abuse last year by tweeting: “You have no idea what your hateful words could do to someone’s spirit. Enough is enough! […] waking up/going to bed to your ugliness is just TOO MUCH, kids. I get it, OK? You can stop now.”
You went on to tweet: “As for my mistakes, God has dealt with me.” In others words, you owned up to your poor choice of making that ill-advised diss song. And I commend you for that. It shows that you’ve matured beyond the situation and that fans should move on, too.
So on behalf of the BeyHive, especially those who may never fully understand the weight of their hurtful comments, I sincerely apologize. For every ugly or negative thing I’ve ever said to you at the attempt of a joke or way to ridicule you in the past, you were right: it was taken too far. Hopefully, you’ll find it in your heart to forgive my shadiness as I have forgiven yours.
