Our favorite Gladiator will be presented the award, which is given to those in media who have made significant strides in promoting equality. Washington, who has been very vocal about speaking out against the oppression of the LGBT communities across the globe, has been a major advocate for marriage equality among same-sex couples in America and abroad.
In a statement about this year’s Awards Ceremony, GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said, “Throughout her illustrious career, Kerry Washington has consistently brought life to characters that encourage acceptance of LGBT people. Her outspoken support for equality, both here at home and abroad, has sent messages of hope and empowerment to fans all over the world, fostering dialogue that builds understanding and helps move hearts and minds.”
Past recipients of the award include Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Drew Berrymore to name a few.
Kerry will be presented with the award at the ceremony in Los Angeles on March 21.
