When we think of our favorite celebrities, the last thing on our minds is “broke.” With a myriad of hit singles, major brand endorsements, and sold-out shows there’s no possible way these stars could be penniless. But this was a reality for the Queen of monsters, Lady Gaga.
The “Applause” singer revealed in a clip for her forthcoming documentary Who the F–k is Arthur Fogel? that she was bankrupt during her 2009 Monster Ball tour. “I had three million dollars in the bank to my name and I threw it all in to make my stage,” said Gaga in the clip via Entertainment Tonight.
“I remember I went home and I was with my dad and he said, ‘I don’t understand. ‘Bad Romance’ is out. You are all over the radio. Everyone is talking about you and you don’t have a pot to piss in.’ I said, ‘Just let me do this. Let me just put it on the stage because I think if I can do this I can get Arthur Fogel’s attention.’ And I did.”
Fogel, who serves as the chairman of Live Nation’s global touring division, was 100% behind Gaga and gave her the deal of a lifetime. He informed Gaga that Live Nation and himself wanted to get on board with her and the New York native was granted a $40 million check from the music company.
