Lauryn Hill’s tardiness to her own shows caught up with her on Saturday night (Nov. 1) during her set at the Voodoo Festival in New Orleans. After showing up 45 minutes late to her hour-long slot, management at the festival decided to cut Ms. Hill’s performance short. Mid-way through “Ready Or Not,” Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean” filled the speakers, drowning out Hill before the lights were lowered on stage.
According to Billboard, fans were unhappy with the Voodoo Festival team – instead of Hill – stating that management “disrespected the artist.” Hill was given another set later on a smaller stage, to which she was 45 minutes late again. Fans who had waited around began to boo, while others decided to leave. When she did appear on stage, however, her remaining audience received her second performance well, though she never directly addressed her lateness.
“Thank you so much for coming back y’all,” she said.
