Lupita Nyong’o is A-list talent after just one film. Although her story seems like an overnight one, the path from her home country to 12 Years a Slave was paved with obstacles. The Academy Award nominee tells Interview Magazine that school was the only way to fulfill her childhood dream.
“When I was younger, I was almost too afraid to admit that I wanted to be an actor. I didn’t know any successful actors in Kenya, so I felt like I could get away with going to college to study film more easily than I could with saying, ‘I want to be an actor.’ That’s what I did.,” she says.
The Non-Stop actress took a gamble and decided that getting (or not getting) into acting school would be an accurate forecast of her future.
“If I didn’t get in, I was prepared to figure out some plan B. Luckily, I got in.”
We’re glad she got in, too!
