Love them or hate them, the selfie is here to stay. The term was even added to the Oxford Dictionaries Online. Sure, snapping a pic of yourself can come off a bit narcissistic, but sometimes you just have to show off a cute outfit or an unusually great hair day. However, we’ve seen enough selfies to know they’re not all created equally. There’s an art to snapping a great pic, so do yourself a favor by following a few of these handy tips. Your followers will “like” you for it.

Just Say No to the Duckface:
When you’re at a loss for how to pose or want to show off your new lipstick, the natural default is the duckface. This needs to stop. And when the duckface is mixed with flashing the peace sign, it’s a double whammy of lame and you’re better than that.
Play with Angles:
Shooting a photo from the bottom up isn’t the best idea. Newsflash, it makes your head look massive and no one wants to look up your nostrils. Instead, hold the camera slightly above your head with your chin tilted down. This provides a more flattering, and even slimming picture.
No Toilets in the Background:
It’s tempting to take a
selfie in your bathroom or especially a public restroom (those massive mirrors are selfie heaven!), but who really wants to see a toilet in the background? Instead, consider taking it outdoors for a more scenic background. And if you absolutely have to take a bathroom pic, at least make sure the toilet isn’t in plain sight.

Lighting:
Sunlight, especially mid morning or later in the afternoon, can make for prime selfie time. When situations are ideal, you can lay off the filters and just let your natural light shine.
Wipe Your Mirror Down:
If you haven’t cleaned your mirror since purchasing it, it’s probably not the best reflection you want to present to the world. Whipping out a little Mr. Clean takes a few seconds, but being stuck with a dirty mirror selfie can last a lifetime.
Distract with Sunglasses:
Had a long night that left you with bags under your eyes? Don’t feel like putting on a stitch of makeup? If that’s the case, a pair of oversized sunnies are your best friend. They hide a multitude of sins while keeping you stylish.
Strike a (Relaxed) Pose:
Being overly pose-y (legs crossed, hand on hip, etc.) reads as too contrived. A natural stance is much more attractive. And by natural we mean looking directly at the camera or pensively staring off in to the distance.
