On February 14th, Melissa Harris-Perry and husband, New Orleans mayoral candidate James Perry, welcomed their daughter into the world.
If you were shocked to know she was pregnant, don’t be because the new mommy gave birth via surrogacy. Unbeknownst to many, she revealed her reasoning in a letter to MSNBC explaining why she chose this route to have her daughter. She went into detail about her fibroid troubles and hysterectomy which led her to surrogacy. “It took two families, three states, four doctors, and five attorneys to get this little girl here. And while our gestational carrier has no genetic tie to our little one, she is now our family,” the mother penned.
The happy couple also shared a few pictures of their daughter on their perspective Twitters: “Here’s the wonderful Valentine’s day gift that @MHarrisPerry & I received yesterday. A beautiful baby girl,” her husband tweeted. The news anchor added, “Best Valentine Ever! @JamesHPerry and I welcomed our daughter yesterday! #TinyNerdinNerdland pic.twitter.com/PEHuBdUaRG”
The surrogacy route can be a difficult, but necessary decision for parents who can’t successfully carry for nine months. Melissa is one of the most recent celebs to decide on this factor and certainly not the only one.
