Anyone tired of the “mammie in a fat suit” and intelligent yet “inherently evil” Black characters in cinema? Well this Sundance winner, Dear White People, is for you! The humorously candid film pokes fun at today’s race relations from the perspective of four Black students at a fictional ivy-league school. Think of it at this generation’s Hollywood Shuffle.
The film is written and directed by the up-and-coming Justin Simien, who characterizes it as “a satire about being a black face in a white place.” Everybody Hates Chris star Tyler James Williams plays Lionel, “The Token,” while Tessa Thompson of For Colored Girls captivates as Samantha, “The Rebel.”
The festival favorite has been making its rounds and gaining momentum—recently playing in front of a sold out crowd at the LA Film Festival. The trailer released just a week ago (June 18), and has already gotten over one million views and counting. Check it out below and be sure to see Dear White People in theatres, October 17.
