After 12 years, American Idol is starting to lose some of its sparkle. As the inaugural music competition reality series, it’s redefined what it means for audiences to interact with television. Unfortunately, no amount of guest performances, endearing contestants or behind the scenes drama could keep it from disappointing ratings.
With the fate of the current four judges in limbo, everyone is waiting to see how Fox plans to return the series to its former glory.

Stevie Wonder
He performs at just about every awards show and major Hollywood function. After almost 50 years in the business, we think he’s more than sufficient in judging potential recording artists.

Lauryn Hill
Her legal troubles may be headline news, but her legacy in music is everlasting. With just one album, she proved that ladies can rap, sing and sell millions at the same time. Who better to share wisdom on the ups and downs of the industry than her?

Simon Cowell
Idol just isn’t the same without him at the judging panel. That blunt and honest critique will keep audiences tuning in week after week like the old days.

Kelly Clarkson
She’s arguably the most successful contestant since the show’s debut. Kelly knows what it’s like to be up on that stage, making her the missing link between contestants and the audience.

Janet Jackson
Miss Jackson is the definition of an “American Idol.” We don’t know if she’s officially retired, but this would be a great way to stay visible without actually making an album. How great would it be to see her duet with a contestant?

Vincent Herbert
He’s responsible for launching the careers of many including Lady Gaga and Mindless Behavior. As the resident “industry expert,” he can really hone in on who has money making appeal. We would love to see a Tamar Braxton appearance here and there, too!
