Female DJ’s are few and far in between, so we’re always happy when we find one that knows how to rock the turntables. DJ Xenia Ghali is making global noise not only with her skills, but work outside the DJ booth as a producer. She snagged former Pussycat Doll Jessica Sutta for her first single, “Out With A Bang,” the perfect song to play before a night out on the town.
We chatted with the Greece native about getting her start, working in a male-dominated profession and misconceptions about dance/electronica music.

Name: DJ Xenia Ghali
On getting her start: I grew up playing classical piano and flute at a very young age and later picked up the guitar and the drums. I wouldn’t really say I transitioned into DJing because I still play other instruments, but I was always fascinated by DJ performance and especially dance music. When I moved to the UK in 2008 for my Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition and Production, I invested in a couple of second hand Technics SL-1210 MK5G turntables and actually started teaching myself how to DJ using vinyl records. I fell in love! I remember running back to my dorm from my classes just so I can mix on my turntables again!
On misconceptions about electronica music: I can’t even count how many times I’ve heard that dance and electronic music is not musically interesting, ‘easy’ to produce or not ‘real music’. I am a firm believer that every genre has its audience and its purpose.
On her favorite hip-hop/R&B artists: I always loved Missy Elliott. I also really admire Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Macklemore and Miguel because besides the fact that their music is incredible, they aren’t afraid to push boundaries and experiment with various sounds and style; an all time favorite is Run-DMC!
On what makes her different: Dance/electronic music is very popular in Greece…I also sometimes find myself writing melodies which are reminiscent of Greek and Mediterranean music. I love combining my music and DJ performances with fashion and various art forms (such as theatre and dance) and I always try to do something original and creative. When it comes to what I do, I always say that boundaries are only there to be broken! Maybe I’ll do a DJ set with a live string orchestra one day.
On “Out With A Bang:” ! It is about living your life to the fullest, enjoying the moment, and taking the world by storm! In other words, it’s about going OUT WITH A BANG! The featured singer is the incredible Jessica Sutta (from the Pussycat Dolls) who absolutely kills the vocals.
