Nick Cannon’s BET Awards attire had everyone wondering what was up. He hit the stage rocking a pick with a mini fro as if he watched a marathon of He Got Game. It was TMZ that actually got the answer out of him. He’s prepping for what he hopes is his next movie role, the Richard Pryor biopic.
“There’s been a lot of people out there that have discussed playing this role… So I never want to jinx anything because if it’s not in production, it’s not real,” he told TMZ. “I’m doing the work right now, I’m doing everything I need to do to embody him when the opportunity’s right.”
And by everything he means everything, (“I have been in the character—the hair, I’m growing everything out looking like I’m forty, the chain smoking—I’ve told Lee the only thing I won’t do is freebase”) in hopes that director Lee Daniels will give him the coveted spot. He’s even posted a juxtaposed picture of him currently to the late Pryor.
“When it comes to something as sensitive as a legend like Richard Pryor—there’s so many things that go into weighing in on who should be this person,” he continued. “So I don’t want to be out there like ‘yeah I’m doing it’ and then you look up and it’s not the case.”
However, he’s realistic in his approach to the film that will tell the troubling and hilarious story of one of the funniest man to ever do it. He knows how Hollywood goes so he won’t say he’s gotten the role, but he will dance around the possibility.
TMZ’s Harvey Levin asked him to tip his hat if he wasn’t playing the famed comedian and Nick—press play to find out what his response was.
