Grammy nomination night brought a bevy of mixed emotions from hip-hop fans. Many championed Frank Ocean, Nas, Rick Ross and Kanye West among others for their potential wins. Unfortunately, their female counterpart Nicki Minaj was (arguably) overlooked with zero nominations.
“I’ve gotten tons of awards and I believe when it’s my time to get a Grammy, I’ll get a Grammy,” she told The Associated Press. Although the Young Money princess is responsible for one of 2012’s biggest hits, “Starships”, as well as the gold Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, she hints at the Academy’s reason for snubbing her. “I think that the Grammys had a different reason that I do not want to discuss … and that’s just between me and them,” said Nicki. “But I respect their organization and I’ll get a Grammy eventually. I’m not worried about it.”
Instead, Minaj counts her sold-out tour as an indicator of true success: “But when I go to my shows and I’m selling out arenas in London, and when I’m in Australia and Japan, there aren’t any Grammys there,” she explained. “There are human beings who I’ve touched. There are human beings who are inspired by me, who I love dearly. And that’s what my career is based on.”
It’s still unknown whether Nicki will attend the big show that’s set to air live February 10 from the Los Angeles Staples Center.
