Those who live in New York City often declare it the center of the universe. It’s home to hip-hop, Madison Square Garden, Fifth Avenue and thousands of famous faces. People from around the globe spend their hard earned money just to see Times Square light up at night.
Sure, we love all of those tourist attractions, but what does a “real” New York experience entail? According to many (mostly New Yorkers), the only way to truly experience the greatest city on earth is by living here. If you plan on visiting soon, our fool proof guide will trim some of the fat off your city-wide excursion.

Amusements
What’s a summer without roller coasters and day trips to the beach? New York may be synonymous with skyscrapers and crowded streets, but it has small beach town appeal as well. Pools are great, but sand beneath your feet is better. NYC’s got some pretty dirty beaches, so go the sanitary route with Long Beach. It isn’t free, but the trade off is worth it. If you want classic New York, you must catch the N/Q/R to Coney Island. There’s enough carnival rides and boardwalk food to satisfy you for an afternoon.

Libations
Now let’s talk about more important things, like alcohol. Drinking is to New York culture what popcorn is to butter: they just go together. I can’t imagine how long it would take to count the amount of bars have a cocktail, so we’ll mention just a few.
Blockheads is the go-to spot for margaritas. They’re cheap, large in size and delicious. If you want a more well-rounded (drunk) night out, The Fat Black Pussycat is where it’s at. Their beer list is extensive and the cocktails are to die for! As one of the city’s best happy hour spots, they also host a dance club and live music several days a week.
Those looking for an all day bar crawl should also check out Tonic East, Highland Park, Harlem Tavern and Le Souk (hookah!).

Clubs/Lounges
Want to party like a celebrity? You may need an agent or VIP pass to get in, but spots like La Marina, Empire Roof Top and Top of the Standard are all swarming with the who’s who of Tinseltown.

Restaurants
With news spots opening every week, it’s hard to figure out where to cure your hunger pains. Comfort food lovers should venture to Lower Manhattan for Mac Bar and El Cantinero. If you’re fancy, head uptown for French/Italian cuisine at Landmarc or amazing Asian eats at Philippe Chow.

Get Cultured
New York City is the only place that makes history fun. Immerse yourself in the classic Metropolitan Museum of Art or American Museum of Natural History. If you’re short on cash, visit the Brooklyn Museum on Saturdays, where admission is free. You’ll be thankful for the air conditioning if it’s 100+ degrees outside.
