Well, the weather outside has been nothing short of delightful these past few days, and I couldn’t be more excited. I love springtime! Not only is it my birthday season, but the weather is a mild blend of summer and autumn, flowers are in bloom. I can’t explain it, but spring seems like such a feminine season! It brings back high school memories of riding around the city with my friends, so this post is dedicated to the girly, bouncy, cutesy music some of our favorite Vixens have gifted us with throughout the years. Pump up your bass, roll down your windows and let the spring breeze blow through your fresh ‘do as we take a quick trip down memory lane!
1989-“Ladies First” x Queen Latifah feat. Monie Love
I first heard this song on “In Living Color.” The Fly Girls did a dance routine to it, and I spent the rest of my afternoon learning all the words. Ladies First put Queen Latifah on my radar; personally, I still consider it one of her best works. And Monie Love was everything on the track! You can’t help but feel empowered with this song bumpin through your system!
1995-“Don’t Take it Personal (Just One of Dem Days)” x Monica
Have you ever been around a group of females and heard Monica’s voice come through the speakers singing “Don’t Take it Personal”? Bet money everyone forgets whatever they were talking about and goes “This is my songgggg!” Monica was one of the popping-est young artists when I was growing up, and every Vixen in the world can relate to this song.
2001-“Bootylicious” x Destiny’s Child
C’mon now. Would any list of girly, bouncy, cutesy songs be complete without Bootylicious? A song that celebrated the jiggle in your thighs and the junk in ya trunk?? I think not.
2004-“Milkshake” x Kelis
This was my anthem in the eighth grade! I was obsessed with Kelis and loved everything about her–that bushy, pretty hair, those big doe eyes, the fact that she was dating Nas (whom I had loved since Illmatic)… She was everything in those low-rise jeans in the video!
2006-“Show Stopper” x Danity Kane
To this day, if I wanna get all the way turned up in the car with my friends, I will not hesitate to press play on that Danity Kane album. “Show Stopper” was a certified Vixen track from the bass to Dawn Richards’ beautiful voice just melting over the beat. Just thinking about it makes me wanna get cute and step out somewhere with my girls!
2006-“Get Me Bodied” x Beyoncé
There were a lot of pretty, bouncy, cutesy songs to choose from on Beyoncé’s B’Day album, but the video for “Get Me Bodied” took the cake. Those sequined dresses, that breakdown, and Kelly, Michelle and Solange doing the scissor-leg brought it to another level for me. Walk across the room like Naomi Campbell. *Snaps*
2007-“Promise Ring” x Tiffany Evans feat. Ciara
I’m not gonna lie; this was my ringtone back in ’07. It had the three C’s: cute, catchy and Ciara. What more could you ask for in a girly springtime anthem?
2008-“Sandcastle Disco” x Solange
Can somebody tell Solange we need another album? I played this song all the way out when Sol-Angel & The Hadley St Dreams dropped. And who can forget her in that fur get-up in the vid? Ugh, it was all so cute, I can’t even stand to think about it!
2009-“Itty Bitty Piggy” x Nicki Minaj
I don’t care that this wasn’t mainstream. “Itty Bitty Piggy” is still one of Nicki’s best songs ever. Yea, I said it! This was before the ice-cream pink wigs and blue contacts. *Crosses fingers and prays for Old Nicki to come back*
2010-“Rude Boy” x Rihanna
The beat, the video and the fact that almost no Vixen can hear it without busting out in a slow wine solidifies “Rude Boy” as one of the best girly tracks of 2010! If you say you never had “Rude Boy” as your ringtone, you’re probably lying.
2010-“Pretty Girl Rock” x Keri Hilson
With that title, how could this song NOT make the list? Keri showed off a lil’ bit on this track. I’m not ashamed to say I still bump this from time to time.
