To be young, wild and free is an awesome thing, but what happens if you meet an older and established man?
I have several friends who’ve taken the route of dating an older guy (7 or more years their senior), and there seems to be nothing wrong with it initially. However, slowly, but surely, the intensity of commitment begins to weigh on the younger party. Sure, it’s fine to reject a less experienced sect of men because you think they can’t live up to your expectations, but they’re never quite ready for the experience and maturity of an older lover?
All men usually come with baggage that young women can’t (or don’t want to carry); however, an older guy’s life can pose a few challenges for you. Here’s a list of questions you should ask yourself because skipping off with an aged XY chromosome.
1. Do I want to get married?
At a certain age, older men are established to the point that they’re searching for The One. Get caught up in their rapture and you could been eyeing a wedding aisle much sooner than later. If you’re still looking to sow your wild oats or create a lane for yourself, put a rain check on that serious relationship, if only to experience your own life first.
2. Do I want kids?
The older your older guy is, the more likely it is that he has a kid (hopefully, not too close to your age!). There’s nothing wrong with that, just be prepared to play step-mommy. Creating a blended family usually means that you’re number two, playing second to a family that he’s already started. If you can handle not giving him his first child or dealing with kids that aren’t yours, then move forward, my friend.
3. Am I where I want to be in life financially?
You could be in the beginning stages of building your bank account to a stable level and climbing the career ladder. Quite honestly, that’s hard to do while you’re distracted with a ready-to-wed lover. If you’re the type that likes to carry your own weight, don’t run to Daddy Warbucks. Get your funds in order, then merge.
4. Am I ready for the new sexual experience?
Who can say “no” to this?! However, a more experienced lover may scare the bejesus out of a timid lover. Be ready to get your rocks off. (Oop, can we say that?)
5. Am I ready for someone with “old” style?
Your older guy could dress well, but “well” for an earlier era. You have to be accepting of him shunning the trendy threads for his throwback ‘fits. (Shallow? Maybe a little…)
Snuggling up with an older guy has its benefits, but be prepared for the extra romance (and reservations) that come with the package. Dating someone your own age is a world’s difference from someone, say, 10 years older than you, and with that said, this older guy could be ready for a windstorm of things that you’re just not. There may be cheating and there will be arguments, but there’s a maturity level that comes into play, allowing no room for the games you potentially would play with a younger guy. Be sure to get the games out of your system before snagging a super senior lover.
