As a late teen or a twenty something, you are bound to have a roommate. Whether it be your college dorm or first apartment, having someone to split bills with can ease the stress that accompanies the place you call home. Make sure your co-habitation is a pleasant one with these simple rules and regulations.
Rule #1 Come in with an open mind
Whether your roommate is a complete stranger or old friend, enter the experience with an open mind. It also helps to have an initial meeting to go over what your likes or dislike are.
Rule #2 Can they come over?
Be mindful of the people you invite to your shared place. Always tell your roommate ahead of time when you are expecting company. Nothing is worse than coming home after a long hard day to find that all 9.5 members of the Wu- Tang Clan are there without your knowledge.
Rule #3 Although we share a home, we don’t have to be homies.
You don’t have to necessarily like your roommate, but there has to be some mutual respect there.
Rule #4 Ask and it is given (maybe)
If it’s not yours– don’t touch it. Yes, that Tropicana juice (that you did not buy) in the fridge might look ever so delectable, but instead of drinking the juice and creating a total sh*t-storm later; make life easier by asking your roommate if you can use, borrow, eat or drink their things. Who knows– they might say yes.
Rule #5 Cleanliness equals friendliness
You don’t have to be Mrs. Immaculate, but try to be tidy. No one likes a slob.
Rule #6 Speak up
Save the passive aggressive post-it notes. If something is bothering you, set up a meeting with your roommate and hash it out like adults.
Rule #7 Lock Up
Like burglars or stolen items? I didn’t think so. When you leave the house, even if it’s just for a hot second, always lock up.
