There are very few landmarks in the U.S. that immediately elicit pretentiousness and desires to achieve the fashion American dream. But Bergdorf Goodman manages to extract both. I remember the first time I walked into the high-end department store as a teen—I was amazed at the fancy Prada, Gucci and Fendi bags and the display windows were unlike anything I’d ever seen before. A decade later I’m still in awe.
Luckily director Matthew Miele and his cinematographer, Justin Bare, created Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s, to celebrate and document the retail store’s greatness. Once you get past the interviews with iconic heavy-hitters—Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs—you’ll notice a few other fashionistas like Mary-Kate Olsen, Joan Rivers and Nicole Richie making cameos.
