A single mother of three recently graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) with two Bachelors degrees and a Masters degree, according to CBS News. Deanna Jordan had her first child at 18 and when she had her third son at 22 she knew she had to do something that would secure her sons’ future.
“I had him and in the hospital I remember thinking, “I’m 22, there’s no future unless I can create one,” Jordan said.
After that epiphany, the Compton native attended West Los Angeles Community College for two years and then spent three years and a half years at UCLA. Her three degrees include a Masters in African American Studies.
“I needed for my sons to see there was a legacy that preceded them with college,” the 28-year-old told CBS. “I am the first in my family to go to college.”
While studying at UCLA, she and some volunteers founded the Compton Pipeline Task-force, which provides mentoring, parental guidance, academic and community outreach and more to children in Compton schools.
Jordan wants to take a year off before she heads to law school. She hopes to becomes a district attorney. Go girl! Watch her story here.
