Being a teenager these days is full curveballs, like applying to the right college and figuring out the right filters for that cute IG post, but when you’re the creator of a fairly successful six-second-clip, your days are busier than most. Kayla Newman also known as Peaches Monroe, is the inventor of “on fleek,” a favorite saying that took off in the form of a Vine in 2014. The then 16-year-old is now older, wiser and out to trademark her expression.
Speaking to Teen Vogue, the 18-year-old shared her thoughts on the hilarious saying, her plans for a beauty line and the reaction to her Vine. Since dominating the now-defunct platform, Newman’s motto for brows has landed on bars from rappers like Nicki Minaj and Cardi B to fashion designer’s graphic tees. The teen was thrilled by the response but didn’t expect companies to start profiting from it. “Honestly, when I saw celebrities using “on fleek,” I felt good,” she said. “It showed me they actually do pay attention to young people. I was kind of disappointed when I saw brands taking and using the phrase, but I knew my time would come.”
While juggling college life, Newman is working on a multicultural beauty brand. Using the power of the deep web, Newman has raised over $13,000 on GoFundMe. “The makeup products I’m thinking about right now are eyebrow pencils, eye shadows, and, eventually, a foundation,” she said. “I’m still working on the style and branding, though, and I haven’t officially come up with any names yet. I want to send a message that everyone can enjoy makeup and be “on fleek.” I want people to use my products and feel good about themselves. I would consider that to be my impact on beauty.”
Through the funds of her line, Newman is hoping she can finally trademark her saying. The teen’s dreams might vary at the moment, but she’s not letting that stop her from making them all happen. “I’m trying to be successful, but I’m also a full-time college student, so it can be tough,” she said. “Also, follow your dreams and don’t let anyone bring you down. And always meditate; you have to have your mind mentally prepared for whatever comes your way.”
