Our former cover girl Laverne Cox is not only an amazing actress, but trailblazing advocate for the transgender community. On Monday (Jan. 6), she alongside model Carmen Carrera appeared on Katie Couric’s talk show to talk about their advocacy, but were instead probed about the physical transitions they went through.
Before things got out of hand, Laverne eloquently shifted Katie’s attention to the issues that people’s obsession with the physical transition create.
She said the “preoccupation with transition and surgery objectifies trans people and then we don’t get to really deal with real lived experiences; the reality. By focusing on bodies we don’t focus on the lived realities of that oppression and that discrimination.”
Cox, who is currently filming the second season of Orange is the New Black, is also prepping a documentary about Cece McDonald, a woman currently imprisoned for fighting back during a racist/transphobic attack that resulted in one death.
