Brittney Griner wants to be an example for anyone struggling with acceptance.
After becoming the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, the 22-year-old baller revealed that she is a lesbian during an interview with Sports Illustrated. “If I can show that I’m out and I’m fine and everything’s OK, then hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way.” Griner says.
She has always been honest about her lifestyle and advises others in the LGBT community to do the same. “Don’t hide who you really are…I wouldn’t say I was hiding or anything like that. I’ve always been open about who I am and my sexuality. So it wasn’t hard at all.”
The 6-foot-8 faces new challenges now that’s she headed into the pros. However, she offers advice to anyone facing the pressures of being true to who they are. “Don’t worry about what other people are going to say, because they’re always going to say something. Just be who you are.” — Terry Carter
