The snow may still be falling (at least in the New York area), but the first touches of spring are all around us. The days grow longer, the salt supplies grow low, and, most importantly, the Oscars will arrive on March 2. Last year was one of the best in recent memory for film; stunners like Her, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street are all favorites to grab a share of the small golden men.
Unfortunately, not every great film will be honored by the Academy. Just like with the Grammys, there’s plenty of could’ve-would’ve-should’ve. Many great filmmakers won’t even be in attendance because they weren’t nominated. So an additional celebration of cinematic achievement is needed. Here are 10 great movies that won’t be winning any Oscars at the 86th Academy Awards but should be recognized anyway.
