Lee Daniels’ The Butler, in theaters this Friday (Aug. 16), presents a historical narrative of America from the POV of those who experienced the Civil Rights movement. Filtering it through a father-son dynamic over the course of seven presidents could have been a daunting task. Fortunately for movie fans, Daniels and his charismatic cast create fascinating wrinkles that tell of the history of our country.
Loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, a head butler for the White House for 34 years, the movie stars Forest Whitaker as the mild-mannered Cecil Gaines. His son, Louis (David Oyelow>), objects to the way his pops has provided for him and his family, and sets out to fight racism in his own way.
