It was a busy weekend for Chicago music fans as Common and Chance the Rapper set the city on fire with two festivals. On Saturday (Sept 24), Chance threw his first ever Magnificent Coloring Day music festival for a sold out crowd at Guaranteed Rate Field on Chicago’s South Side. While on Sunday, Common, along with nonprofit organizations Donda’s House and Common Ground put on his second annual AAHH Fest at Union Park on the Chi-town’s west side.
The lineup featured several artists who are soon to be superstars like Sir the Baptist, Vic Mensa and The Internet — along with some hip-hop heavyweights including Common himself and Ice Cube. Bilal and Jeremih added some soul to the mix along with a very special guest performer, R. Kelly, who sang a couple of his classics and gave a brief freestyle that paid homage to his home city.
J. Cole closed out the show with a lively act that included some of the songs off his acclaimed album that “went platinum with no features,” 2014 Forest Hills Drive, along with some of the songs he explained only his day-one fans would recognize. It was certainly a special night filled with some special performances.
