On Tuesday night (Jan. 10) the 2023 Golden Globes gathered Hollywood talent in Beverly Hills, Calif. for an evening of celebration. After a 2021 Los Angeles Times report revealed The Hollywood Foreign Association’s lack of Black members, Jerrod Carmichael was tapped to host the ceremony and delivered an opening monologue making multiple digs at the organization.
“I’m here because I’m Black,” he joked as he stood center stage as the annual event’s first Black host. The comedian continued to recognize the faulty history while uplifting the nominees despite the institution’s history and current reckoning with discriminatory practices.
“I’m here, truly, because of all of you,” the charismatic host remarked. “Regardless of whatever the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s past may be, this is an evening where we get to celebrate.”
Bringing monumental wins for stars like Angela Bassett for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary, and Eddie Murphy’s receipt of the Cecile B. DeMille lifetime achievement honor, the annual affair shined in Black excellence. On the red carpet, inside of the ceremony, and at the event afterparty, the fashion-forward looks matched the glamourous energy of one of Hollywood’s biggest nights — including multiple looks from Carmichael himself.
