Her Opponent: Photographer David LaChapelle
Why They Were Beefing: Shortly after Rih-Rih dropped her Melina Matsoukas-directed video for “S&M” back in February, LaChapelle claimed that the video was a direct bite of at least eight photographs that he had taken over the years. He sued her for plagiarism.
The Result: If you take a look at some of the photos in question, it’s not hard to see that Rihanna and Matsoukas were, at the very least, influenced by LaChapelle’s work. But judging from her most recent video, this beef hasn’t exactly caused her to tone down her approach to creating visuals in any way. Good for her.

Rihanna Beef 2
Her Opponent: Lady Gaga
Why They Were Beefing: Rih-Rih had some choice words for Gaga after the pop singer released the video for her Beyonce-aided song, “Telephone.” Specifically, she took shots at all of the product placement going in within it. “I don’t like things to be so commercial,” she said. “Videos should just tell the story of a song. With product placement, it becomes this big ad campaign.”
The Result: Gaga doesn’t really do beef—she’s probably too busy coming up with those crazy costumes—but we’re guessing you’re not going to catch these two on a record together anytime soon. -
Rihanna Beef 3
Her Opponent: Chris Brown
Why They Were Beefing: Do we really have to explain this one? If so, you’re probably reading the wrong magazine right now.
The Result: Two years after their “incident” at the 2009 Grammy Awards, Rih-Rih and Chris Breezy seem to be back on speaking terms (more on that later!). But you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think her tough new attitude isn’t at least partially the result of what went down between her and CB. -
Rihanna Beef 4
Her Opponent: Sandra Rose
Why They Were Beefing: In February—shortly after Rih-Rih softened the restraining order she had placed against Chris Brown back in 2009—Rose took to Twitter to say that “true fans who supported Rihanna during those tough times after chris brown beat her azz deserve better than this.” Rihanna fired back a few hours later. “I would’ve sworn he beat YOUR ass, just by how upset u are!” she wrote. “My fans don’t care about a restraining order and neither do I!”
The Result: Well, if nothing else, Rihanna proved that she does pay attention to what’s going on out there on Twitter! -
Rihanna Beef 5
Her Opponent: Parents Television Council
Why They Were Beefing: After watching Rihanna and Britney Spears perform on stripper poles in bondage-style outfits at the Billboard Music Awards last month, the PTC chastised both artists.
The Result: We’d say Rihanna learned a valuable lesson. But less than two weeks after this incident, she gave a female fan a lap dance on stage at a concert. Soooooo, yeah. Take that, PTC. -
Rihanna Beef 6
Her Opponent: Parents Television Council (take two!)
Why They Were Beefing: Did the PTC just hear about Rihanna or something? Whatever the case, she’s clearly got their attention right now as they also lodged a complaint about Rih-Rih’s new “Man Down” video last week. They called it “an inexcusable, shock-only, shoot-and-kill theme song.” And they called for it to be pulled from TV so that children couldn’t see it.
The Result: The PTC clearly hasn’t been the only group upset about the visuals shown in the “Man Down” video. But Rih-Rih shot back (no pun intended) at them shortly after they complained by calling into BET’s 106 & Park to explain her vision more clearly. “Rape is, unfortunately, happening all over the world and right in our own homes,” she said. “And we continue to cover it up…[Young female fans] are empowered by this. This is a story for them. It’s not for critics.” Good point. -
Rihanna Beef 7
Her Opponent: Twitter user @NinyaBella
Why They Were Beefing: After Rih-Rih released the cover art for her single, “Man Down,” one fan (who appears to be a young white lady in her Twitter avatar) took to her Twitter account to ask, not about the song, but about the way Rihanna’s hair looked on the cover. “Why does her hair look so nappy?” she wondered. Later, Rihanna fired back: “Because I’m black bitch!!!!”
The Result: Hold up: Didn’t we already tell you that Rih-Rih pays attention to what people say on Twitter? Watch what you say, people! -
Rihanna Beef 8
Her Opponent: Twitter user @iStan4Rihanna_
Why They Were Beefing: In mid-May, Rihanna started following Chris Brown on Twitter again, which upset many of her fans. One even tweeted: “I never thought you would go back to him! You better not, it’s your life but you do have ppl that look up to you. e.g. young girls.” The reaction caused Rih-Rih to shoot back: “its fuckin twitter, not the alter! calm down.” She later apologized.
The Result: This is the last time we’re gonna say this: If you write something about Rihanna on Twitter, she will hunt you down and do something about it. And not everyone is getting an apology. -
Rihanna Beef 9
Her Opponent: Ciara
Why They Were Beefing: During an episode of E!’s Fashion Police, Ci-Ci was chatting with Joan Rivers and stylist George Kotsiopoulos when Rihanna’s name came up. And Ciara didn’t seem to have anything nice to say about her. “Rihanna used to be so nice,” she said. “I just saw her and she wasn’t the nicest.” That led to a Twitter spat between the two, which included barbs like, “My bad ci, did I 4get to tip u? #howrudeofme” (from Rihanna to Ciara) and “Trust me Rihanna u dont want to see me on or off the stage” (from Ciara to Rihanna).
The Result: To be honest, we’re not sure. It seems like they patched things up after their short scuffle—albeit on Twitter—but don’t hold your breath if you’re hoping they’ll perform or record together in the near future -
Rihanna Beef 10
Her Opponent: Minister Louis Farrakhan
Why They Were Beefing: In March, Minister Louis Farrakhan said that he thought Rih-Rih’s performances were “filthy” during a speech in front of 18,000 people. He also said that the people who enjoy watching her perform are “swine.” Rih-Rih jumped on Twitter after learning on the comments to repsond. “A minster says I perform filthy, sat+watched the filth, then called u SWINE for doin the same!” she wrote. “Haa,Is that judgment in ur tone? #justgetsbettR.”
The Result: Think Rih-Rih’s above calling you out for your hypocrisy just because you’re a minister? Think again. Let this be a lesson to anyone who decides that they want to beef with her: This girl clearly isn’t afraid of anyone.
