With only a few days left until the action-thriller End of Watch, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña, hits theaters, now is your chance to get an early sneak peek at all the hoopla! Filmmaker David Ayer (writer of Training Day) brought his talents back to Los Angeles in this very visceral ride-along with two thrill-seeking cops.
As Officer Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Zavala (Peña) return from leave after killing two subjects in the line of duty, these two bad boys in blue are even higher-profile stars at the precinct house than usual. It doesn’t help that they document their every turn with cameras coming out of every orifice. With members of their own force either resentful (America Ferrera and Cody Horn) or disgruntled (David Harbour) by their actions, the two heroes eventually stumbled upon a discovery that manages to get the attention of the Mexican drug cartel.
The macho-swagger presented in this adrenaline-producing flick is not the only reason why you should spend your hard-earned dollars in this cops vs. cartels drama, which comes out on September 21st. We have 5 Reason Why You Should Go See “End Of Watch” for you to check out after the jump!

Dope Camera Work —
End of Watch presents the gritty tale of good guys versus cartel members in the rawest manner possible and from very interesting points of view. Audiences will be amazed as you watch the drama unfold through dashboard and surveillance cameras, shaky cams, and heavy body rigs. The stylistic framework that director David Ayer employs works best during some of the deeply emotional, camcorder-shot scenes and keeps the viewer immersed in the storyline throughout the whole ride.

Jake’s Return To Form —
End of Watch will mark Jake Gyllenhaal’s first movie in over a year, and he’s jumping right into the fire. The Academy Award nominee plays Officer Taylor, a Los Angeles cop and former Marine who patrols the toughest parts of the city with his partner, Officer Zavala, played by Michael Peña. The duo have a grand chemistry as young, brash enforcers of the law, which leads to some great personal moments and action-filled ones, too.
David Ayer’s leads reveal a lived-in authenticity that will have folks recalling Gyllenhaal’s same rugged strength in Jarhead, and enjoy the raucous ride he shows in End Of Watch with gusto.

Adrenaline-Filled Action-Packed Thrills —
While Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña are the film’s Wild Wild West enforcers, they’re not white-hat wearing do-gooders throughout the picture. Here, in David Ayer’s picture, the rules are ignored. Doors get kicked in, faces get smacked around, and there’s a pretty interesting mano y mano match-up between Peña’s character and a Blood gang member.
While the Mexican cartels don’t showcase their terror which encompasses the plot of End Of Watch, audiences will see some American aspirants to their level of terror-fueled success in the form of the Curbside Gang. If riding around in a Cops-esque full-length feature film is your idea of excitement, then witnessing scenes of self-documented mania will appeal to your inner black hat-wearing bad guy.

An Awesomely Assembled Cast —
The action-thriller End of Watch could possibly be the hardest hitting, most honest buddy cop movie you’ll ever see. Grounded in reality, the picture profiles the everyday relationships between L.A.P.D.’s finest and the very real feelings between them and the ones they love and protect. The cops have their interaction with the lawbreakers and dirt mongrels of the “ghetto” they canvas, yet it’s the quieter moments in the patrol car with Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña, and their romantic interests that are the most fun to watch.
These two characters are seriously engrossing, humorous, engaging, and charismatic and their relationship is the movie’s core driving force. The naturalness and ease of their friendship while on the force is a joy to behold. Equally captivating are the supporting players, notably Anna Kendrick as Officer Taylor’s girlfriend Janet and Natalie Martinez as Officer Zavala’s high school wife Gabby. There is an intimacy and camaraderie between the two police families that beguile the action and this cast that shines brightly throughout this entire film.

Director David Ayer Amazes —
After giving cinephiles such venal and brutal characters like Detective Alonzo Harris (Training Day, Denzel Washington) and Sergeant Eldon Perry (Dark Blue, Kurt Russell), director David Ayer sets End Of Watch in the heart of South Central, Los Angeles. Gang culture is dominant, lawlessness has its own pecking order, and in Ayer’s work may just be the finest of them all.
Cut out of the narrow alleyways and bad attitudes of South Central, Ayer captures the good, the bad, deadly and the horrifying in many creative ways. Through clever rigging of cameras, a superb script that showcases the familial bonds between the police and their personal lives, End Of Watch has a strong commercial appeal to those looking to enjoy a great night out at the cineplex.
