It’s been 10 long years since Joanna “JoJo” Levesque released her self-titled debut. The album—which featured the hit single “Leave (Get Out)”—peaked at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 chart, and all signs seemed to point to JoJo transforming into a pop star.
That became even more likely two years later when she released her sophomore album, The High Road, which, thanks to the smash “Too Little Too Late,” reached No. 3 on the albums chart. Surely JoJo was going to turn into one of the biggest pop stars in the country after that, right? Er, not exactly.
For the past seven years, JoJo has been stuck in label limbo. For one reason or another, her home, Blackground Records, never got around to releasing her third project. She claimed to record not one, not two, but three different versions of the album, had official tracklists and even shot covers.
While fans have been patiently waiting, she put out two mixtapes—2010’s Can’t Take That Away From Me and 2012’s Agápe, both of which received positive feedback—but an official album never surfaced.
That should be changing soon, though. Earlier this week, JoJo revealed that, following a long legal battle, Blackground finally released her from her recording contract and that she’ll be working with Atlantic Records. Fans are understandably ecstatic that JoJo now has a chance to take her career to the next level. Here are 7 reasons why the new deal is a good move for JoJo.
