As comedians go, Joan Rivers is peerless.
The iconic funny woman, who died Thursday (Sept. 4) at Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest the week prior, during a procedure at an outpatient clinic, is being both lauded (and criticized) posthumously for her hilariously venomous tongue.
But the influential talent is also known as a trailblazer for women in comedy. Rivers evolved from being a one-time protege of late night talk show legend Johnny Carson and later an in-demand ’80s Las Vegas fixture to a comeback queen who reinvented herself most recently as the host of the howling E! show Fashion Police, where she gleefully lambasted celebrity fashion.
Over the years, Rivers has even rubbed shoulders with a diverse range of hip-hop and pop culture notables. As her memorial service is set to take place this morning (Sept. 7) at Temple Emanu-El In New York City, VIBE reminisces on some of her funniest interactions with our culture. —Keith Murphy (@murphdogg29)
