Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook and his teammates, including Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka, banded together to promote literacy for the fifth annual “Why Not? Bowl” on Thursday (Apr. 9) at AMF Boulevard Lanes.
Establishing a set of reading rooms for at-risk youth, the event in partnership with Scholastic provided a total of 1,200 books, audio libraries, and listening stations. Westbrook also launched a reading challenge which teaches students to make reading a daily priority, with participating OKC schools already having reached a 738,141 minute-mark.
“It’s an honor to be able to see it unfold,” Westbrook said. “When I first talked about a foundation, we kind of sat down and had a plan and to see it unfold is a blessing and is a great thing.” Donations were also made by the Jordan Brand, Planet Sox, Trapp Candles, 808 Audio, Kings and Jaxs underwear, and UNU iPhone Gadgets.
