Fans React To ‘Surviving Compton’ Biopic

Michel’le’s story was left out of the 2015 blockbuster, Straight Outta Compton, but now one of the first ladies of Southern Los Angeles has gotten a biopic of her own. The R&B singer’s story, Surviving Compton: Dr. Dre, Suge & Michel’le premiered on Lifetime Saturday (Oct. 15) and by a majority opinion on the Internet, the TV film was a hit. Many fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

Surviving Compton chronicled Michel’le’s rise to stardom, as well as her controversial and allegedly abusive relationships with Dr. Dre and Suge Knight. A mix of outrage, disgust, shock, and joy went ablaze on social media during the film’s debut.”Best biopic made by Lifetime. So happy that you got to tell your story. You are an amazing and beautiful woman,” one fan tweeted. Many praised up and coming talent, Rhyon Brown for her spot on portrayal of Michel’le. “This actress is playing no games! Great job so far, Rhyon Nicole Brown,” one fan exclaimed.

While many rejoiced in the R&B singer’s story finally being told, others had some choices words for Dr. Dre and Suge Knight. The film showed a series of intense scenes between the singer and the N.W.A. rapper, in which he aggressively punched and hit her. “Watching the movie I knew @drdre was abusive, but looking at this movie, it put a visual to it. I lost respect for him. He is a monster,” one person said. “I don’t support woman beaters!!! Anything @drdre related, I will throw away,” one fan chimed in.

The outpour of fan reactions follow reports Dr. Dre was preparing a legal case against his ex for the “defamatory” documentary. Prior to Surviving Compton’s premiere, Michel’le spoke out about the alleged legal case, saying she would go forward with “her story” as planned.

“Is he saying that he just didn’t abuse me at all? Because I’m insulted if that’s what he’s saying,” she told TMZ Live Wednesday (Oct. 12). “I allowed him to portray his self in his story the way he wanted to portray himself, and he allowed me the opportunity to portray myself in my story. And I think my truth will stand when we get to court, if we do.”

An encore presentation of Surviving Compton: Dr. Dre, Suge & Michel’le will air Sunday (Oct. 16) at 9p.m. ET on Lifetime. But in the meantime, check out some of the fan reactions in the gallery above.
