A female high school student dressed up as rapper Kodak Black for her school’s “Character Day.” 17-year-old Floridian Claire Kempe wore camouflage shorts, a jean vest, a “free Kodak” shirt, gold fronts, a styrofoam cup, makeshift tattoos and Bantu knots.
Twitter was split between whether to chastise Kempe for her costume or to leave her alone. Many users chastised her for what they see as appropriation; her Bantu knots in particular were a hot topic.
Other users said that it was just a costume, and noted that hers was more tastefully done than what it could have ended up looking like. Kempe herself did not use black face to portray Kodak, and she told The Daily Dot that she will probably use her costume for Halloween this year.
“Racism is still a big issue, but they don’t know it’s an issue that I care about,” said Kempe. “They don’t know me or who I hang out with or what I do.”
