On Sunday (Sept. 25), Rémy Martin’s “The Producer Series: Season 2” came to a finale in New York City. The event took place in the swanky PH-D rooftop lounge at the Dream Downtown Hotel. Bright chandeliers dangled above the hyped crowd, and black couches snaked all around the venue joined by tables dotted with cheese-fruit platters, and tiny burgers—as the Chelsea skyline served as a backdrop for the music infused night. Wyclef Jean and Power 105.1’s DJ Reymo presided on the stage, during the event.
Dubbed the industry’s hottest beat battle in the East Coast, the event expanded this summer; claiming its beat-making territory in Boston and Philadelphia—featuring the likes of DJ Premier, Jahlil Beats, Honorable C.N.O.T.E, and Wyclef Jean. This past Sunday’s finale showcased a tight competition between eight producers, all battling it out in four different rounds until one was the chosen winner. The competition included remixes of Jean’s new track “Hendrix.”
The finalist included: NewO Tha Kid (NY), Point 1 (NJ), Real Precyse (MA), Evan Brown (NY), Ellio (MA), D.H. The Composer (PA), and Josh Lamont (NY); leaving Ovalord (NY), the winner. The battle was judged by Jean, and a panel of industry vets including Vashon “Rap” Straws (National Director of Mixshow Promotion, Universal Republic Records), Theo Brown (National Promotions Director, Atlantic Records) and Rebekah Espinosa (Sony Music Associate Director of Marketing). Rémy CEO (Americas) Philippe Farnier was also in attendance.
Ovalord took home a slew of prizes, like a Rémy Martin Producer Series season two plaque, a Down Town Locker Room gift bag (which features Levi’s jacket and jeans, Stance Socks, New Era caps), $4,500 Guitar Center Gift Card, Under Armour products, and meetings with 300 Entertainment.
Amid the cool prizes, Ovalord and the rest of the young producers were definitely gifted with exposure, which was something that didn’t come as easy back in the day. Jean echoes these sentiments.
“This event is incredible because when we were coming out I had to sit with an A&R, I had to be like ‘this is hot, that’s not,’” he told VIBE. “It’s almost like the A&R’s held you hostage to the music, because you know how many dope mother f***ers were dope, but they didn’t have this exposure.”
“The thing about the Rémy Series is that now it goes back in the hands of the people. The crowd can say, ‘This person won, but this is my favorite. I’m going to follow this one online,’ he explained, adding that he “loves the mixture of the raw talent you see in here, and going online in raw time and people seeing that.”
And luckily for those producers who are out in the West Coast, the Rémy Martin “The Producer Series” will be making shop for two days in Los Angeles and one date in San Francisco starting in mid-October.
