While Pharrell Williams flourished at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America on Monday night (Jun 1), earning this year’s Fashion Icon Award. In a surprise appearance, Kanye West presented the music and fashion multi-hyphenate with the honor.
In true Kanye fashion, he took the opportunity to speak his mind. In doing so, ‘Ye expressed his sour sentiments towards the fashion industry for its lukewarm response to his attempts at becoming part a fashion tastemaker.
“It is very difficult to break perception,” West said. “Fashion had to be the hardest high school I ever entered. At least I had a big brother,” he said of Pharrell. Also, calling him his “style idol.”
Pharrell, then thanked many of fashion’s elite for inspiring him, and humbly said: “I’m not a style icon. I’m just inspired. And I’m OK with that.” He also took to Twitter to further thank the CFDA and West:

Mrs. Kanye West was also on hand to present the media award to Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom, who dubbed her as “the queen of Instagram.” And of course, the evening would not go without mention of Caitlyn Jenner.
This is what Kim had to say regarding Caitlyn’s recent coming out: “Everyone has been so supportive and so amazing and I think that that’s all we could really ask for is kindness, and we feel that,” she professed, according to The Associated Press.
