It looks like 50 Cent can finally put the scandal that resulted from his 2009 beef with Rick Ross behind him – but unfortunately, it’ll cost him. A jury ruled on Friday (July 10) that the rapper/actor/mogul will pay $5 million dollars in damages to Ross’ baby’s mother, Lastonia Leviston, for posting her sextape onto his website. The ruling included $2.5 million for using Leviston’s image without her permission, and an additional $2.5 million for intentional infliction of emotional distress, the New York Daily News reports.
According to 50 Cent’s lawyer, James Renard, Fif obtained the footage from Maurice Murray, Leviston’s ex-boyfriend who was also featured in the video. In a pre-recorded deposition, 50 alleged that he didn’t think he needed Leviston’s permission because he had gotten Murray’s. The jury eventually sided with Leviston however, because 50 altered the video to include his own character, “Pimpin Curly,” calling Leviston a “b*tch” and a “h*e.” Leviston’s lawyer, Philip Freidin, originally sought $20 million in damages for the humiliation the video caused when it eventually went viral.
Along with the ruling and $400,000 in legal fees, 50 Cent may also have to pay up a few more pretty pennies for failing to show up in court to testify and hear the verdict. He is now facing punitive damages, which will be calculated based on his financial net worth statements. The amount he will be expected to pay should be large enough to prevent him from “indulging in similar conduct in the future,” according to Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Paul Wooten.
