Filibustering is just one piece of political action not thrilling to any House member, but the import of a self-help book by 50 Cent by a Missouri senator made it quite hilarious.
On Monday (April 25,) Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-MO) read excerpts from “The 50th Law,” a motivational book by the rapper and Robert Greene on fearing nothing to obtain just about everything you want in life. Chappelle-Nadal was reportedly against the state’s plan to allow particular areas of St. Louis County to have a say so in funding law enforcement. Fox News reports.
Chappelle-Nadal says she wants the state to focus on the many internal issues the police force needs to revamp before allocating them any funds. While her filibuster was a success, bill 123-24, a similar bill to the sales plan passed later that day.
The senator’s filibuster can be added to a number of others that have ironically stood the test of time. There’s the 10 1/2-hour gesture by former presidential candidate Rand Paul against the Patriot Act in 2015. The record holder for the longest filibuster goes to one-time segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond who sweated out his toxins in advance and made an intern stand by with a bucket as he opposed the The Civil Rights Act of 1957. His time stands at 24 hours and 18 minutes.
Next time, maybe a play by play of 50 Cent’s Instagram feed may leave a better impression on the house.
