In celebration of the 25th anniversary of their debut album, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, A Tribe Called Quest grace TV screen with a reunion performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Backed by The Roots for a rendition of their classic track, “Can I Kick It?” Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White injected nostalgia into the audience with the necessary call-and-response performance.
In a recent interview with NPR, Phife Dawg recalled the motivation behind the legendary group’s unique style: individuality.
“Back then, biting was forbidden. Nowadays, it’s pretty popular: MC So-and-So has a line that he originated, another MC comes along and takes it,” he said. “We pretty much were always into being ourselves. We didn’t wanna be anybody else.”
A 25th anniversary edition of People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm has been re-released in a deluxe version featuring remixes of the group’s classics by the likes of Pharrell, J. Cole and more. Watch A Tribe Called Quest kick it once again in the video below.
