On Aug. 16, Franklin died at age 76 from pancreatic cancer. The “R.E.S.P.E.C.T” legend was surrounded by her family during the time of her passing. In a statement issued to the public, the award-winning musician’s relatives expressed their sadness with Franklin’s passing.
“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart,” the statement reads. “We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.”
A tribute concert will also be held on Thursday (Aug. 30). Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, The Clark Sisters, Shirley Caesar and more are scheduled to perform. The Detroit Free Press notes tickets are already sold out.
