In light of yet another ended relationship, Ariana Grande decided to take a moment to acknowledge her old flames and release a new song positive break-up anthem titled “Thank U, Next.” Hear the new track down below.
At the start of the nearly three and half-minute track, the 21-year-old singer-songwriter gets right to it and addresses her relationships with Big Sean, Richard “Ricky” Alvarez, Mac Miller, and her former fiancé Pete Davidson. “Thought I’d end up with Sean, but he wasn’t a match/ Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh,” she begins to sing. “Even almost got married, and for Pete, I’m so thankful/ Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm, ’cause he was an angel.”
As the synthesized track continues, the “God Is A Woman” Grande shares how although the relationships didn’t work out, she learned life lessons about love, whether shared with the men in her life or within herself. With self-love at the crux of the song’s message, she keeps an optimistic outlook on the future, shares her decision to focus on her relationship with “Ari,” and repeats “Thank u, next” in the chorus.
“Thank U, Next” comes days after Davidson, her ex-fiancé, joked about marriage in a Saturday Night Live promo video and Grande’s now-deleted tweets where she wrote, “For somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it huh…thank u, next.” Hours before dropping the song, Grande tweeted, “no drags…. no shade….. jus love, gratitude, acceptance, honesty, forgiveness … and growth.”

Update: 12:31 AM ET (November 4, 2018) – Upon the release of this song, Davidson has addressed their break-up on Saturday Night Live saying, “The truth is it’s nobody’s business and sometimes things just don’t work out and that’s ok. She’s a wonderful, strong person and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world.”
