A$AP Rocky has encountered a lot of pain within the last year, and after opening up about his loss about his right-hand man A$AP Yams, he now discusses his break-up with ex-girlfriend Chanel Iman. In a vulnerable and down-to-earth interview with MTV, the entertainer opens up and reveals facts about his depression over the split. “I got really depressed because I knew that–she deserves better than me,” he said.
Chanel Iman and Rocky were aesthetically perfect, likewise to a past Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz or Bianca and Mick Jagger. They just fit. Rumors spread of the two being engaged at a point in 2014, and it just seemed like paradise was dressed in all black. Surprisingly, Rocky was the one who called it quits. Keeping her worth in the front of his mind, the Harlem rapper made one of the hardest decisions of his life when he called it quits, knowing he couldn’t be the man she deserved. There’s hope for a flame re-kindling, especially with the friendship still alive and well to this day. Rocky still calls Chanel his best friend.
Iman wasn’t all he discussed in the sit-down. He also dished on his forthcoming album A.L.L.A. (At.Long.Last.A$AP), the Sundance film, Dope, and A$AP Yams’ passing. Check out excerpts from the sit-down and watch the entire interview below.

On Chanel Iman still being a friend:
[Chanel’s] my best friend, man. For real. Because you have to be mature to be in this kind of predicament and have a relationship. I never really talk about things kinds of things, her and I, like that. And she never really talks about me, so I’m really gonna say much on the subject but, she’s happy, and that’s all I want. I want her to be happy.
On feeling sad about the split:
I got really depressed [when] me and Chanel broke up in June. I got really depressed because I knew that–she deserves better than me. That’s the truth and everybody knows it. And I don’t wanna be the guy to Lauryn Hill her, if you know what I’m saying. I love her so much so that I would rather [fall back] than to be with her and hurt her. I don’t want to hurt her. Not that I’m saying she’s some piece of meat that I could just play with. Nah. I’m just saying, just to be mature about things in life — I do know where I am in life — I’m still having fun and I’m young and I need to focus on my career. I still have her. She’s still in my life. It’s a win/win situation.
On he and Chanel being fashion complements:
[Chanel] is a very classy woman, but I was born jiggy. Ask her! But she’s like, really elegant and her whole style is classy. I would call her aesthetic “ballroom gowns.” Like, that’s her–she kills that. That’s what I wanted. She looks like a big ass princess and I appreciate her beauty. She’s one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever laid my eyes on. Of course we’re [still friends]. And we just killed this movie, Dope. Number one at Sundance Film Festival.
