Beyonce is no stranger to the GRAMMY stage, and Sunday night (February 8) Queen B delivered an emotional performance unlike anything she’s done before.
In an eight-minute black-and-white documentary, Beyonce revealed it was her mother, Tina Knowles, who first introduced her to Mahalia Jackson’s version of the Gospel classic “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” B later explained her grandparents marched with Dr. King during the Civil Rights movement, and as a result of their efforts (and many others) her father was a part of the first generation of black men to attend a desegregated school, but still experienced a lot of trauma.
Backed by black men of all ages and backgrounds, Beyonce, who took home three awards during the 57th Annual GRAMMYs bringing her total to 20, said she wanted to use the performance to showcase black men in a different light.
“I wanted to find real men that have lived, that have struggled, that have cried, that have a light and a spirit about them. I felt like this an opportunity to show the strength and vulnerability in black men,” Beyonce said.
