Hold up, wait a minute…you thought Bey was finished?
Beyoncé woke up around 5 a.m. EST this morning (Nov. 1) to show off her latest on-point Halloween costume paying homage to a black queen. This time around, the Everything Is Love singer paid homage to track and field legend, Florence Griffith-Joyner. Affectionately known as Flo Jo, Joyner is widely considered to be the fastest woman of all time.
In her tribute, Beyoncé wears Flo Jo’s signature purple leotard, turquoise shorts and the competitor number 371 on her stomach, which is the outfit that the late-track star wore during her record-breaking 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials run. According to ESPN Classic, it was at this particular trial that she sprinted 100-meters in 10.49 seconds. She still holds the world record for the fastest time for this event.
In another photo Bey posted this morning, JAY-Z can be found paying homage to some other black track stars- Tommie Smith and John Carlos. The two are famous for doing the Black Power salute while on the podium at the 1968 Olympics.
Earlier this week, Beyoncé posted photos dressed as R&B legend Toni Braxton, which garnered a ‘thank you’ message from the singer.
“How do you look better than me on MY album cover?” Braxton wrote. “I LOVE IT, Such a superstar! Thanks for the love sis!”
We love Beyoncé’s effortless intentionality and beautiful tributes to some of black America’s most esteemed legends. Queens recognizing queens! Well done.
