The state of Louisiana is set to receive some much needed relief following August’s devastating flood. According to Entertainment Weekly, Beyonce and Solange Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Tina Knowles-Lawson will partner with Essence to raise $1 million for those affected by the flood in Baton Rouge.
The event, which will commence at Raising Cane’s River Center on Nov. 20, will also increase funding for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge. In a statement issued to the website, Tina Knowles-Lawson highlighted her familial attachment to the Pelican State and her plans to turn around Baton Rouge’s misfortune.
“Louisiana is a special place in my family’s history and we are committed as a family to never forget the city and the people of Baton Rouge,” she said. “It breaks my heart to see the unimaginable disaster and destruction caused by the flooding and we will stand and support every effort in place to help the people most affected.”
“Love On Louisiana: An Essence Hometown Heroes Tribute” will also highlight educators and students who strive to make a difference in their neighborhoods. The state’s governor, John Bel Edwards, also praised Essence for their continued support of Louisiana, and said this event arrived at the perfect time.
“This is the time of year when families, friends and communities come together,” he states. “Our people have endured many setbacks over the last several months, but they are resilient and determined to come back stronger. But we cannot do it alone and that is why it is so gratifying to know that you support us and that your hearts are with Louisiana.”
The flood, which occurred in mid-August, left nearly 61,000 homes unrecognizable. According to FEMA, the number of residents or whole households that filed for housing assistance was 109,398.
