No matter where he travels, Big Sean is never far removed from his Detroit roots. In honor of his 32nd birthday, the rapper announced his upcoming studio album, Detroit 2, on Wednesday (March 25).
“Detroit to me it’s home, but I feel like it’s more than just a city, you know? It’s fa real a mentality,” he says in a two-minute visual shot in the Motor City. “What’s crazy is the things I thought would destroy me came full circle to fuel me.”
The album trailer chronicles Sean’s journey through the recording process of Detroit 2, complete with snippets of new music. Young Thug, and Hit-Boy, make cameos in the video where Sean also reveals that he’s been listening to music that “impacted” him as a child.
“I been going back listening to music that impacted me growing up,” he explains. “Songs that I hear on the radio every day, but I didn’t even realize it was only popping in Detroit.”
Detroit 2 is the follow-up to Sean’s 2012 mixtape named after his home town. His last studio album, I Decided, was released in 2017.
