Cardi B walked away from the 2018 VMAs with one of the biggest awards of the night, winning “Best New Artist” against some serious competition from Chloe x Halle, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Pump, Kayley Kiyoko and Bazzi.
Releasing her debut album Invasion of Privacy earlier this year, Cardi has been on a steady winning streak since her breakout track “Bodak Yellow” climbed to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 in June 2017, going six times platinum since.
The “Best New Artist” award is an accolade that holds heavy value to artists as it is one of the few awards that are fan-given. Powered by Taco Bell, fans worldwide were able to tweet for Cardi’s success through hashtag homage. By the end of the night, the “Bartier Cardi” rapper was the fourth largest worldwide and second largest United States trending topic.
In typical Cardi fashion, her acceptance speech was equal parts appreciative and expressive.”I had a baby, I carried the baby, and now I’m still winning awards,” she started, taking shots at her doubters. “I wanna thank all my fans, my family, that supported me” she continued. “All the love that my fans, that my friends, that everybody shows me is genuine and that’s something that God give me that you can’t buy, bi**h.”
Cardi also ended the night with a Moon Person for “Song of the Summer” with “I Like It,” featuring Bad Bunny & J Balvin, as well as “Best Collaboration” for Jennifer Lopez’s “Dinero” featuring DJ Khaled.
In July, Cardi was crowned this first woman rapper with two songs topping Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart when “‘I Like It” tore through the summer.
