Chicago Hip-Hop Soul Singer Johnny P Has Passed Away

Chicago’s Johnny P, the singer known for his mesmerizing hooks on 90’s classics from Scarface to Do or Die, has reportedly passed away.

Do or Die confirmed the news on Twitter as well as Johnny’s oldest daughter Sunday (Nov. 27). FakeShoreDrive reports the singer fell into a coma earlier this month, sparking death rumors. He was later put on life support. Inspired by the likes of Sam Cooke and Michael Jackson, Johnny P began singing at the age of four and later formed a group with his sister. After she had decided to take the back seat to her brother’s talent, Johnny P ended up with a deal from Columbia in 1989.

He went on to release his debut album Connect the Dots and toured with the likes of the late Whitney Houston, The Jacksons, Michael Bolton, Regina Bell, MC Hammer and Jeffery Osborne. His most notable credits would come in the world of hip-hop with his collaborations with Do or Die’s and Twista’s “Po Pimp” and Scarface and Tupac’s “Smile” in the 90’s.

After signing with Rap-A-Lot Records/Virgin Records in 1999, he released his sophomore album, The Next. Johnny P has been hailed as Chicago’s Nate Dogg and continued performing locally. He recently posted to Facebook he was working on new music.

A favorite of many hip-hop connoisseurs, fans paid homage to him online, including fellow Chicago bredren Lupe Fiasco.
