Sway may not have all the answers, but Common definitely does — at least in terms his rhymes. The Chicago native joined “Sway in the Morning,” and performed a dope freestyle Tuesday (May 31) that’s lighting up the Internet.
“For the American Black Film Festival. You know, we going to do it right,” he began, as Sway laid down the exclusive Primo instrumental.
In just two verses, the rapper covered a number of topics, including the Black Lives Matter Movement and influential black voices in the industry.
“Hot damn, black America again/ Think of Sandra Bland as I’m staring in the wind/ The color of my skin they comparin’ it to sin/The darker it gets the less fairer it has been,” he raps. “The hate made, I inherited from them/ But I ain’t going to point the finger/we got anointed singers/ like Nina Marvin Billie, Stevie/Need to hear them songs, sometimes to believe me, who freed me? “
Common also touched on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.
“You put a ni**a in ‘Star Wars,’ maybe you need two/And then maybe then we’ll believe you,” continued.
