D’Angelo’s comeback is in full swing. Dropping off his third solo album Black Messiah back in December, the soul crooner had not shared live renditions of the album’s tracks until his appearance on Saturday Night Live last night (Jan. 31). Belting out the album’s lead single “Really Love,” the usually reclusive singer also used his platform to relay a message.
During their performance of “The Charade,” D’Angelo’s band, The Vanguard, acknowledged the deaths of Eric Garner and other police brutality victims with “I Can’t Breathe” and “Black Lives Matter” shirts. A chalk outline on the stage floor also offered another layer of symbolism, referring to the death of Mike Brown. The singer sported a hoodie as well, which many recognized as an ode to Trayvon Martin.
D’Angelo returns to the road for his “The Second Coming” tour, which kicks off with a show at The Apollo Theater on Feb. 7. Watch his Saturday Night Live appearance in the videos above and below.
